The Spring 2008 Arbitron ratings are out (finally, I never understood why it takes them so long). Its time to take that information, combine it with your knowledge of your local market, and tune up your radio station.

Even if you are happy with your place in the market's ratings, you can still make your station better.

After every Arbitron report card, you need to ask yourself and your staff these questions:

Are our promotions focused on our ideal listener?

Are our current music rotations too fast, too slow, too large or too tight?

Do our golds fit our currents? Are they fresh?

Is our outside marketing placed in the right places for our demo to see it?

Do our on-air talent waste breaks or is every one a “sliver bullet”?

Does our website need to be spruced up?

Do our station vehicles really represent the station well?

Are any specialty and syndicated programs unnecessary or off target? Are we missing any?

Is our news product tight and timely?

Is our weather provider accurate enough to be associated with our product?

Are our sweepers and liners fresh?

Is it time for a new station voice?

Should we consider a new jingle package?

Is there a local franchise we can partner with to provide more exposure to our demo? (A franchise could be a local sports team, festival, or event that draws a massive crowd or fans.)

Have we teamed up with the right charitable organizations that match our station's goals?

Do we consider going all-Christmas music during the holiday season?

After you get the answers for these questions, you are ready for Spring 2009 because if you didn't ask yourself them after Fall 2007....its too late for Fall 2008. You should always be three quarters ahead in your planning. Like the old Boy Scout motto...BE PREPARED.
